I. PURPOSE

This policy has been written to provide guidelines to help define a professional look for the laboratory and patient areas and to take into consideration patient, co-worker, and employee comfort and safety.

This applies to all personnel performing phlebotomy in client’s offices.

III. PROCEDURE

A. General Guidelines
     a. In consideration of others, perfume, cologne, aftershave, scented lotions; scented hair products and          anything with a scent should not be worn.
     b. Extremes in makeup or hairstyles as well as visible tattoos or body piercings (excluding ears) are
         not allowed.
     c. Hair should be clean and neat. Long hair must be pulled back or otherwise confined. Beards and
         mustaches should be neatly trimmed. Staff should exhibit good personal hygiene.
     d. Jewelry must be conservative and not to interfere with employees duties. Earrings are limited to no
         more than two per ear.
     e. Fingernails must meet the following guidelines:
         • Artificial fingernails (i.e. acrylics, gels, silk wraps) are not to be worn by employees with direct            patient contact (i.e. phlebotomist).
         • All employees must keep fingernails clean and well groomed. Fingernails are not to exceed one fourth           (¼) inch beyond the fingertip.
      f. Closed toe shoes must be worn at all times while in the laboratory. Shoe soles should be of non- slip
         and non- marking material.
B. Uniform Guidelines
     a. Protective clothing must be worn in the laboratory area by staff assigned to positions that regularly work
         in those areas.
     b. In Office Phlebotomist will follow the dress code for the specific client. If no dress code is defined,
         the employee shall follow the dress code defined in the employee handbook.
C. Business Casual Guidelines
     a. Employees are expected to use good judgment in appearance. Clean, wrinkle free clothing that fits
         appropriately, is not in need of repair, is modest (skirt just above the knee, tops are not too low or
         tight and slacks are not too tight) is expected.
     b. Unacceptable Clothing would include:
         • Any item made from any color of denim
         • Shorts or Capri pants
         • T-Shirts with printing on them that is other than company issued. Dressy, un-collared shirts in
           solid colors are acceptable.
         • Tank tops, halter tops, or any top that shows a bare midriff.
         • Hats or Caps
         • Sunglasses worn in the client’s office.
D. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
     a. Employees performing any venipuncture procedure, specimen testing or other duties considered
         hazardous must wear gloves and other appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) reflective of
         their potential for exposure.
