I. PURPOSE

To provide the proper collection protocol for UroVysion/FISH testing.

II. MATERIALS

Urine:
• PreservCyt preservative
collection vial


III. PROCEDURE

1. Collect a minimum of 33ml of urine. If urine exceeds 40ml, pour off excess volume.
2. Add PreservCyt in 2:1, urine to PreservCyt ratio immediately:
    Urine                  PreservCyt                               Total
    35ml………….. 17ml (7/8 of vial)…………… 52ml
    40ml………….. 20ml (entire vial)…………… 60ml
3. Total PerservCyt volume equals 20mL and total urine and total volume should not exceed 60ml of
    urine and preservative solution in the specimen collection cup.
4. Label the vial with patient name and date of birth.
5. Place urine/preservative mixture in original packaging and store immediately in the refrigerator until
    ready for transport. Decomposition of urine begins within 30 minutes.
6. Transport to clinical lab ASAP on same day. Preferred shipping conditions are on ice packs. Do not
    allow direct contact of ice pack with specimen container. A foam divider or paper towels should be used
    to separate.
7. Provide complete requisition.

IV. QUALITY CONTROL

• Minimum Volume:
    • 30-40 mL
• Storage Requirements:
    • Refrigerate and transport to the clinical department as soon as possible.
• Stability Requirements:
    • 72 hours
