I. PURPOSE

To provide the proper collection protocol for urine cytology testing.

II. MATERIALS

Sterile specimen cup


III. PROCEDURE

1. Label container with patient’s name, date of birth and source / site.
2. Specimen should not be a first morning urine. A mid-stream urine collection is adequate for males.
    In females, a catheterized specimen is preferred, but a mid-stream collection is acceptable.
3. Please avoid weekend collection if possible.
4. Specimen should be fresh; do not add preservative or Cytolyt.
5. Refrigerate and transport to the laboratory as soon as possible.
6. Place container in a specimen biohazard bag with the requisition in the side pocket.

IV. QUALITY CONTROL

• Minimum Volume:
    • 20 mL
• Storage Requirements:
    • Refrigerate and transport to the cytology department as soon as possible.
• Stability Requirements:
    • 24 hours
