Varying body sites:
• Aspirating syringe on
2 slide smears; remaining
aspirate fluid in Cytolyt

III. PROCEDURE

1. Label container and/or slides with patient’s name, date of birth and source site on the frosted end in pencil.
2. Expel 1-4 drops of material on one slide immediately following the aspiration.
3. Place the other slide on top of the first slide with specimen. Spread the glass slides apart from each other
to evenly distribute cells. Immediately fix one smear with spray fixative marked (F) on the slide label and
the other let air dry marked (AD). Two slides are needed per site.
4. Place slides in appropriate cardboard/paper holder and secure with tape.
5. Mix the remaining aspirated material by drawing Cytolyt preservative fluid into the syringe and rapidly     expelling through the needle back into the Cytolyt container. Repeat rinsing may be necessary to wash
the syringe and needle completely. DO NOT submit the needle to the laboratory.
6. Place slides and container in a specimen biohazard bag. Place the requisition in the side pocket of the     specimen bag.
