I. PURPOSE

To provide the proper collection protocol for bronchial brushing testing.

II. MATERIALS

Equipment

Bronchial Cells:
• Bronchial brush
• Glass Slide
• Cytolyt fluid (or saline)


III. PROCEDURE

1. Label slides with patient’s name, date of birth and source site on the frosted end in pencil.
2. Roll brush gently over 2/3 of the slide and immediately preserve with spray fixative marked (F) on the
    slide label.
3. The bronchial brush may be submitted in Cytolyt preservative fluid. For microbiology studies, place
    the brush in sterile saline.
4. Place slides in appropriate cardboard/paper holder and secure with tape.
5. Place in a biohazard bag along with the completed requisition in the side pocket of the specimen bag.
